There is A LOT of misinformation out there!
Remember, this is a completely unregulated industry,
so there are some things you should look out for.
The most common statement I hear from folks is:
"Yeah, I tried CBD oil and it did nothing for me."
Every single time - and I mean EVERY single time - it turns out the individual had done little or no research before they tried CBD and were not using it correctly. BUT IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT! No one just magically has this knowledge without doing some due diligence and the majority of brands available are simply marketed and packaged incorrectly, lacking the imperative information you need to get the maximum benefit.
FACTS:
~CBD oil is a superfood and it is meant to be a daily supplement to your diet, just like a one-a-day vitamin. It is not meant to be used as-needed like an aspirin (with the exception of topicals and vapes).
~CBD must be given time to replenish your CBD-starved endocannabinoid system before you will experience any significant results. If you've had YEARS of chronic pain or debilitating anxiety, you can't expect ANYTHING to miraculously change that in a day or four or a week or even necessarily a month. Some people experience very rapid results, others simply may need to #bepatient and let their bodies work.
~Make sure you know how many milligrams of CBD per serving you are ingesting. If the label says you're only getting 10 mgs of CBD per serving (read the fine print!), well that's not very much and you may not see the results you're hoping for (Kannaway products generally provide 31-33 mgs of CBD per each 3/4 teaspoon serving). Each individual's personal threshold, or "sweet spot," as we like to call it, will be different. The Independent Cannabinoid Research Society suggests the following:
- General health/preventive/sleep: up to 50 mgs per day
- Insomnia/minor aches & pains/depression/anxiety: up to 100 mgs per day
- Neurological/mental illness (bipolar, shizophrenia): up to 200-300 mgs per day
- Severe or chronic pain/injury/major illness/terminal illness: 200-300 mgs per day PLUS
***These are generalized suggestions and are NOT one size fits all. Some people see results from far less than these suggestions, some from far more or from combining applications (i.e.: ingesting oil every day as well as using a topical salve or vape as needed). I recently read an article where a little boy with cancer was taking 1000 mg per day...BECAUSE CANCER. It all depends on how severe the issue(s) you want to address, how your body responds and time. As a general rule, we encourage people to start low and work their way up...and again, #bepatient.***
~All this said, a few drops under your tongue - which is the way most brands market their products - may not cut it for you (unless you are a generally healthy person to start with).
~Watch out for products that are labeled "HEMP OIL." You want the label to clearly read "CBD OIL." Otherwise, it's possibly hemp SEED oil, which does NOT contain any CBD because hemp SEEDS do not contain hardly any CBD (if any at all). If the label says it's "100% pure hemp seed oil," or "hemp oil blend" (or what have you), then make a salad dressing with it and enjoy the OTHER wonderful nutrients hemp seeds can provide as part of a healthy lifestyle. Just don't expect it to do anything for your bum knee.
~Relative to that, CBD oil, to make it ingestible, has to have an additive ingredient in order to liquify it, otherwise it's a paste. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are the most common used. Kannaway uses coconut oil as its MCT. Some brands use cold pressed hemp seed oil instead, which is a perfectly acceptable liquification additive, but it does not make the oil more potent than any other because, again, hemp SEED oil hardly contains any CBD.
~The skinny-jeaned hipster kid working at your local dispensary (if your state has those) is an expert on WEED but most likely NOT an expert on CBD. They generally know just enough to get the sale but then you're on your own. It's always best to seek out someone who is truly knowledgeable specifically in the CBD industry to help you...like ME! π
